R Street Restoration

The homeowners initially brought us in to help renovate the row house they had lived in for over a decade. The kitchen was small, enclosed, and disconnected from the rest of the home, despite being centrally located. We worked closely with a structural engineer to open the space and discovered that a vertical post was required to support the new ceiling beam. Rather than hiding it, we chose to clad the posts in wood and make them a defining architectural feature.

Preserving historic details was a priority for the clients. During the removal of a powder room in the living area, we uncovered the home’s original pocket doors hidden inside the walls. Our contractor carefully stripped years of paint and restored them.

Additional updates included a small tea bar in the dining room, a built in in the family room for kitchen overflow storage, and repainting the entry stairs to highlight the original woodwork. The home features new Kahrs hardwood floors from Spartan Surfaces, Bertazzoni appliances selected for their vintage feel, and paint throughout from Backdrop.
