Serenity in
Takoma Park
This home, steeped in local heritage, was meticulously preserved with a careful appreciation for its original details, including beautifully restored moldings and traditional elements that resonate with the area's architectural charm.
Having relocated from San Francisco, the family brought with them a collection of art and vintage Mid-Century Modern furniture, infusing the space with personality and warmth. Vibrant colors and intricate patterns grace the interiors, reflecting their love for expressive design and adding a contemporary twist to the home's historic backdrop.
The result is a home that’s as beautiful as it is functional, creating a beautiful setting for everyday family living.
Our design philosophy is based on the belief that design is not just about aesthetics, but also about creating environments that make you feel at ease, inspire your best self, and reflect who you truly are.
This was a repeat client after previously completing the living room, dining room, and bedroom. For phase two, we returned to design the library and home office.
Library
The goal was to continue the historic, slightly eccentric character of Takoma Park and the home’s Victorian architecture. The library had previously been an unused storage space, essentially an empty white box. The client envisioned a cozy room for organizing, displaying, and enjoying her book collection.
We opted for a full color drench, carrying the same tone across the walls, trim, built ins, and sofa to enhance the intimate feel. Custom built ins include additional trim detailing designed to match the rest of the house. The room was designed to be flexible enough to function as an occasional guest space, with a pull out sofa and adjacent drawers with lift tops that double as nightstands. Sconce switches and charging outlets are conveniently placed within reach of the sofa. A leather recliner in the corner adds another comfortable reading spot.
Home Office
Because the homeowner works from home full time, the office needed to be functional, inviting, and visually inspiring. A custom double desk provides ample workspace, plus an additional surface for crafting and for her daughter to occasionally join her for homework or art projects.
The client’s playful and personal art collection helped set the tone for the room. We added wallpaper to the ceiling to create a cozy, individualized feel. Her own vintage desk serves as a Zoom backdrop, layered with plants and accessories. Varied lighting including wall sconces, under shelf lighting, and a wall mounted reading light helps illuminate the north facing space, which tends to get darker later in the day
